How do you explain to someone at work that when you pull your toolbox out its your tools you own not theres?

February 23rd, 2010

They will use them without asking.
Its got a lock but its open while im working.

That is truly an excellent question! Unfortunately, I am not entirely sure of the answer, so therefore I wish you the very best of luck in finding it! Hopefully, there will be someone who knows this! Once again, good luck!

Tell them you’ve been loosing tools so nobody can borrow them anymore. If they keep it up take some of their tools home with you. Next you’ll have to put them in the hospital! Quit the job and keep your tools at home where they belong and find a job that pays you.

Keep your box locked unless your using it.
If they still do it with you there in front of it slam the lid on them.
The guy I did this to has never done it again.

You should start with a clear and direct instruction that your tools are not to be used by no one other than you, NO MATTER WHAT. If the person disregards your rule, then you take it to management. Also, If it is your boss who is doing this, you have to make it clear that they have to pay you for using your tools. If management wants you to use your tools for work and they have not reimbursed you for the tools, they cannot claim ownership of any kind and thus must pay you for the use. Otherwise, you could claim the cost/worth of the tools on taxes as a workplace expense that you were not reimbursed for. In the event it is just another co-worker, you will have to put it in writing and hand it directly to management. This legally will require the company to address the issue in accordance with workplace privacy laws in reference to Equal Employment Opportunity Laws. Every one is protected and entitled to a peaceful work environment and you are protected in reference to your own personal things at work. It’s just like someone continuing to take your food you had prepared for your own lunch. If management does not do anything, take it higher. Federal law requires that they follow their company policy in reference to handling this issue if they are a licensed business in the United States. If they say they have no policy for such issues, you can call the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to report such behavior as your company literally ALLOWING other employees to take others’ "personal" belongings without permission. This will spark an investigation.

Some people allow that but most don’t. I would hang a sign on it stating that I don’t mind lending a tool but need to be asked first. If that does not stop it then politely tell the person that that is your personal property and would appreciate it if he kept his hands off but you would not mind lending a tool on rare occasions. Lending tools poses another problem of having it given back. It is a man thing on how to handle it and I use dirty looks and that usually stops it before I fly into a rage.
